When staff vacancies occur, positions are generally advertised in ArtSEARCH and/or in the Maine Association of Nonprofits, sometimes on the Maine Theater Collective Facebook Group. Major position openings are highlighted on our home page with a link for more information. We do not accept or save unsolicited resumes for any position not specifically advertised.
Portland Stage is looking for people that are passionate about using theater to connect communities, inspiring young people, and working as part of a collaborative team to create art. All employees are expected to respect diverse ideas, races, genders, sexualities, abilities, culture, and religions, contribute to working in an anti-racist theater, and value Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access.
Portland Stage Company provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics and any other areas protected by law. In addition to federal law requirements, Portland Stage Company complies with applicable state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment in every location in which the company has facilities. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation, and training.
Portland Stage holds show-specific auditions by invitation only for our Mainstage productions both locally in Portland and in Boston and New York.
Open auditions for members of Actor’s Equity Association are held every year in Portland, usually in the late spring or early summer, and audition notices will be posted with Actors Equity Association. Due to COVID-19, these auditions are likely to be held digitally for the time being.
Portland Stage hires professional artists both locally and out-of-town to direct plays, design sets, lights, costumes, and sound for our productions.
Guest Artists are hired on a show-by-show basis. Portland Stage does accept portfolios and resumes from local designers and members of United Scenic Artists, but does not accept unsolicited material from actors.
The Portland Stage Apprenticeship Program is committed to training future generations of theater professionals. Applicants should be highly motivated individuals who have acquired basic training in the theater arts and are looking to explore their field further through meaningful hands-on experience. Portland Stage apprentices can expect to be challenged by a creative process that relies on both ingenuity and collaboration.
Apprentices at Portland Stage work with leading designers, directors, administrators, and our professional production team throughout the season. They leave with a greater knowledge of the theatrical process and the satisfaction of being part of a dedicated theater company where exceptional quality is the end goal.
We use volunteers in many aspects of the theater to help us do what we do, but our Ushers, who help us run performances by greeting patrons, scanning their tickets, seating them, and serving them concessions, are our primary volunteer corps at the theater.
If you are interested in volunteering as an usher, or would like to offer your services as a volunteer in our costume shop, for mailings, for filing, or for other theater-specific needs, please contact our Volunteer Managers. They will be able to help set you up for ushering or direct you to the proper department.
