George “Bud” & Cheryl Higgins have demonstrated their personal commitment to Portland Stage and our unique approach to teaching literacy, building creativity & developing critical thinking skills through the establishment of the Jamie Higgins Endowment.
Thanks to Bud & Cheryl’s generous support and leadership in creating an endowment to fund the Portland Stage Education Programs, we have been able to cement and sustain our commitment to education and make it an integral part of our organization’s mission.
Our In-School programming reaches students grades K–12 in the Portland Public Schools and throughout Maine and New England. For grades K–4, we have our PLAY Program, which includes a school-wide dramatic reading of children’s literature followed by interactive workshops based on the stories. Grades 5 & 6 are invited into the theater for our holiday Mainstage performance, supplemented by pre- and post-show workshops in classrooms where students further explore the text, characters, and literary elements of the play. Grades 7 & 8 take part in a Directors Lab, where professional theater artists perform a Shakespeare play and then engage with students in their classrooms on Shakespeare’s language, characters, rhetoric, and creative collaboration. Grades 9–12 are again invited into the theater to watch a professional production, followed by a talkback with the cast and staff.
Our In-Theater programming reaches students grades Pre-K–12 and includes camps, classes, intensives, Play Me a Story dramatic reading series, and our Shakespeare Teen Company.
Endowments are an important part of development for cultural and educational institutions like Portland Stage. The principal of The Jamie Higgins Education Endowment is carefully invested, while the income generated supports the implementation of all Portland Stage Education Programs.
