The Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust has generously renewed its support of our Education Programs with a grant for the PLAY Program. PLAY is an educational initiative that promotes literacy for students in grades K-4 through school-wide performances of children’s books and interactive classroom workshops.

Roy A. Hunt Foundation Funds Intern Program For A Fifth Year!
The Roy A. Hunt Foundation is continuing its generous support of our Intern Program with a grant of $7,500.
Portland Stage’s Intern Program, now in its 38th year, has trained over 360 theater professionals, helping young people to develop and launch successful careers in the arts since 1980. Thanks to the Roy A. Hunt Foundation’s generosity, we are able to offer our interns a stipend and housing, in addition to immersive training by experts in the field. Participants in our program have gone on to become theater artists, designers, and technicians working at creative organizations around the world.
Established in 1966, the Roy A. Hunt Foundation is an endowed resource that annually grants almost $3 million in the United States.

Maine Theater Fund Renews Support for 2018-19 Season!
The Maine Theater Fund of the Maine Community Foundation has awarded Portland Stage a $3,000 grant in support of our 2018-2019 season!
This grant will help us continue to provide many points of entry for a diverse population to engage with our productions and programs. Maine Theater Fund’s award will support community engagement initiatives across our season, including Pay-What-You-Can performances, Rush35, Student Matinees, and our free Discussion Series.
Established in 2005, the goal of the Maine Theater Fund is to strengthen and sustain theater performance throughout the state. The Maine Theater Fund is designed to support professional and community theaters in the production and presentation of live theater.

Pay-What-You-Can Program Receives Grant from The Helen and George Ladd Charitable Corporation!
Portland Stage is grateful to the Helen and George Ladd Charitable Corporation for awarding us a $3,000 grant in support of our Pay-What-You-Can discounted ticket program. By allowing patrons to attend the theater at a price they can afford, Pay-What-You-Can performances help us ensure that the offerings on our stage remain accessible to all patrons.

The Onion Foundation to Fund Portland Stage Education Programs!
Portland Stage has received a $12,000 grant from the Onion Foundation for our K-12 Education Programs. The Onion Foundation’s generous support will help us provide vital theater arts education to thousands of students from across the state of Maine, enhancing literacy, cultural awareness, and creative thinking in all grades.
The Onion Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation based in Maine. Their mission is to encourage conservation and stewardship of the natural environment and to promote music and the arts in the state of Maine.

Portland Stage to Receive Arts Learning and Partnership Grants from the Maine Arts Commission!
For the fourth consecutive year, Maine Arts Commission will support Portland Stage Education Programs and operations through its Arts Learning and Partnership Grant programs. Funding from Maine Arts Commission will help us continue to enrich our community through handcrafted Mainstage Productions, dynamic New Work Development, and innovative theater education for grades K-12.
Maine Arts Commission Arts Learning Grants provide funding to support high-quality visual or performing arts education for Pre-K – 12 students and educators. Partnership Grants provide much-needed unrestricted operating funds to arts organizations and establish a process for partnering with the Maine Arts Commission to advance the role of the arts in strengthening communities and enhancing local economies.

The Moser Family Foundation Supports The Half-Light by Monica Wood!
Portland Stage has received a $10,000 grant from the Moser Family Foundation to support the world premiere production of The Half-Light, the second play by bestselling writer Monica Wood. In The Half-Light, a chance encounter presents a tantalizing question for a college secretary: Can anyone be trained to see the dead? Her dogged pursuit of an answer leads to a far more earthbound challenge when a colleague is felled by grief. The Moser Family Foundation’s generous support will help us bring this heartwarming new play to life.

The Brooks Family Foundation, which has supported The Clauder Competition for New England Playwrights since its inception in 1981, is generously underwriting the first phase of the current competition cycle with a gift of $20,000.
For over three decades, the Clauder Competition has been New England’s most prestigious playwriting award, celebrating the distinctive voices of our region’s playwrights and bringing their work to the attention of the greater theatrical community. This gift from the Brooks Family Foundation will allow the competition to move from a three-year to a two-year cycle, providing this extraordinary opportunity to even more playwrights.

A recognition of Portland Stage’s record of artistic achievement, commitment to new work development, and strength as an organization, this unrestricted grant will support our mission of creating great art, using theater to educate, and enriching our community.
The Shubert Foundation is the nation’s largest funder dedicated to unrestricted funding of not-for-profit theatres, dance companies, professional theatre training programs and related service agencies. Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Charitable Foundation to Support Portland Stage Education Programs!
Portland Stage will receive a $2,000 grant from the Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Charitable Foundation to support our In-School Education Programs for grades K-12! These include the literacy-building PLAY program for elementary schools, the holiday production and workshops for 5th-6th graders, Directors Lab for 5th-12th grade students, and our high school Student Matinees. This stepped series of programs encourages students to use their imaginations by examining the world from different perspectives, promoting exploration and creativity while cultivating collaborative teamwork.

Maine Humanities Council and Maine Arts Commission Support Refuge Malja ملجأ Community Outreach!
Portland Stage has received an MHC/MAC Arts & Humanities Grant to support the English-to-Arabic translation of marketing and promotional materials for our upcoming production of Refuge Malja ملجأ. In addition to the translation of promotional materials, the Arts & Humanities Grant will enable PS to engage Maine’s Muslim and Arabic-speaking communities and foster vital civic dialogue around the issues presented in this world-premiere production.
The Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Humanities Council collaborate to provide Arts & Humanities grants that assist organizations in Maine to investigate and present stories and cultural expressions of the state, its communities and its people.

Davis Family Foundation Awards Portland Stage $20,000 for LED Lighting Upgrade!
Thanks to a grant from the Davis Family Foundation, Portland Stage will be replacing many of our current Mainstage lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED fixtures! This will greatly reduce our energy consumption, allow for innovative approaches to lighting design, and put us in a position to pursue more energy efficiency initiatives in the coming years.
The Davis Family Foundation is a public charitable foundation established by Phyllis C. Davis and H. Halsey Davis of Falmouth, Maine, to support educational, medical and cultural/arts organizations located primarily in Maine. Their overriding goal is simple and straightforward: “to make grants where they will do the most good and where our gifts make a real difference.”

Portland Stage to Receive $15,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts
National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $25 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $15,000 to Portland Stage for our Mainstage production of Babette’s Feast.
Babette’s Feast, which runs through February 18, is a re-imagining of Isak Dinesen’s classic tale as a rich theatrical event: deep, funny, dangerous, sensual, and beautiful. It tells the story of how a refugee transforms a closed religious community by sacrificing all she has to throw a lavish dinner party. Through her radical hospitality, this mysterious woman converts her guests’ deeply held notions of scarcity and judgment and opens them up to give and receive abundant grace. The Art Works category is the NEA’s largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts. Portland Stage Receives DGF Writers Alliance Grant for The Niceties and Playwright Eleanor Burgess!
This season, Portland Stage is among 10 theaters selected to receive a Writers Alliance Grant from the Dramatists Guild Foundation. This grant provides $5,000 to Portland Stage towards our Mainstage production of The Niceties, and an additional $5,000 to The Niceties playwright Eleanor Burgess.
Writers Alliance Grants are an innovation on DGF’s previous theater program, which has supported theaters for 50 years. Writers Alliance Grants are awarded in celebration of working relationships that align deeply with DGF core values. These grants reflect DGF’s commitment to ensuring writers’ contributions to theater are respected and to changing the national conversation about how writers are treated by the institutions that produce their work. The Niceties Receives a Grant from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust!
The Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust has awarded Portland Stage a $3,500 grant for our Mainstage production of The Niceties, which will run April 3-22, 2018. In this riveting two-person drama by Eleanor Burgess, a polite clash of ideas between a student and professor soon landslides into an explosive discussion of race, history, privilege, and social justice. We are immensely grateful to the Trust for their support of this passionate, timely new work.
The mission of the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust is to respond to the needs of the Maine communities it serves, and it is dedicated to funding five areas of interest: Social Services, Arts and Culture, Medical, Educational and Environment.
