Portland Stage is dedicated to creating intimate, personal exchanges through live theater that affect people and shape communities. Through the myriad of stories—past, present and future—that inhabit our stage, our work inspires a deeper understanding of the world in which we live. Portland Stage provides access to world-class theater and the creative process for our audience who come from diverse communities reaching from rural Maine to the city of Portland.
At the core of our programming are Mainstage productions—telling human stories of the past and present—inspiring audiences to think about the world in which we live and imagine the future. Each season we create a six-show Mainstage subscription series as well as present a Mainstage Holiday show. To bring our productions to life, artists rehearse 48 hours per week for three weeks, digging into the ideas behind the words, while technicians handcraft sets and costumes envisioned by designers for our space for each play in our season.
In our 75-seat Studio Theater we pioneer new work from writers based locally and around the world with the Little Festival of the Unexpected, From Away, and Affiliate Artist Events, as well as productions put on by our Affiliate Artists.
