George “Bud” & Cheryl Higgins have demonstrated their personal commitment to Portland Stage and our unique approach to teaching literacy, building creativity & developing critical thinking skills through the establishment of the Jamie Higgins Endowment.
Thanks to Bud & Cheryl’s generous support and leadership in creating an endowment to fund the Portland Stage Education Programs, we have been able to cement and sustain our commitment to education and make it an integral part of our organization’s mission.
In grades K – 4, children in our Education Programs participate in Play Me a Story, an innovative performance plus workshop based on children’s literature. Grades 5 & 6 are invited into the theater for our holiday Mainstage performance, followed by a school visit to help students further explore the text of the play they have seen. Grades 7 & 8 take part in a Directors Lab, where classrooms are visited by professional theater artists who give students the opportunity to stage their own scenes. Grades 9–12 are again invited into the theater to watch a professional production, followed by a talk back with the cast and staff. This full range of programming for children and young adults from kindergarten to high school demonstrates the breadth, depth, and complexity of the Portland Stage Education Programs.
Endowments are an important part of development for cultural and educational institutions like Portland Stage. The principal of The Jamie Higgins Education Endowment is carefully invested, while the income generated supports the implementation of all Portland Stage Education Programs.
