About the internships

PRODUCTION INTERNSHIPS:
Carpentry/Set Design
• Costume Design/Wardrobe
• Electrics/Lighting Design
• Sound

Production interns work alongside professional production staff in their assigned departments, assisting with all aspects of construction, maintenance, and run crew. Specific duties will vary according to the particular needs of each production. Production interns may also assist designers on 1-2 mainstage productions, depending on ability, and may rotate into other departments to expand their knowledge in all areas of technical theater.

STAGE MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP:

Stage Management interns work directly with Equity stage managers as an integral part of the stage management team. Interns assist with all aspects of rehearsal and serve as deck supervisors from the tech process through the run of the shows.

DIRECTING/DRAMATURGY INTERNSHIP:

Directing/Dramaturgy interns assist directors during rehearsals of mainstage productions and work with the artistic staff on daily administrative activities in the Literary and Education departments. Interns assist with Portland Stage’s annual play festivals, From Away and Little Festival of the Unexpected. Dramaturgical duties include researching, writing, editing, and laying-out resource guides, reading and evaluating scripts, and assisting with post-play discussions. All directing/dramaturgy interns serve on run crew for selected shows during the season.

EDUCATION/THEATER FOR KIDS INTERNSHIP:

Education/Theater for Kids interns assist the artistic and education staff with planning and running Portland Stage's Theater for Kids program for students ages 4-12. Responsibilities include research, organizing material, leading warm-ups, and co-teaching workshops for Play Me A Story readings; coordinating school performances and workshops; and assisting with Theater Camps. Interns also take part in the ongoing administration of education & outreach programs, including student matinees and classroom workshops. Education/Theater for Kids interns serve on run crew for selected shows during the season.

GRAPHIC DESIGN/MARKETING INTERNSHIP:

Graphic Design/Marketing interns work directly with the marketing and artistic staff on design and administrative projects. Interns gain hands-on experience assisting with writing press releases, design of marketing and education materials, direct mail campaigns, updating the theater's website, archiving, audience services and marketing/development events. Graphic Design/Marketing interns serve on run crew for selected shows during the season.
