Review: 'Harold' depicts bygone era,
but its lessons still resonate

About the Playwright

Athol Fugard (b.1932) is a South African playwright, novelist, actor, and director, best known for his political plays opposing the South African system of apartheid.  In 1962 he publicly supported the Anti-Apartheid Movement (1959-1994), and an international boycott of South African theatres due to their segregated audiences, which led to government restrictions on Fugard and his theater.  Despite the censorship, Fugard continued to go into the slums of South Africa to create theater with and for the poor black population, including Hello and Goodbye (1965) and People are Living There (1968).  While it would be naïve to claim that the work of a single playwright toppled an entire regime, it is undeniable that Fugard's work exerted an influence-educating the world about the ills of Apartheid and eventually helping to bring the collective pressure of many nations to bear on the South African government.  Fugard now lives in San Diego, CA where he teaches at UC San Diego.  Of his 31 plays to date, Portland Stage has previously produced seven: A Lesson from Aloes (1983), Master Harold...and the boys (1986), Sizwe Banzi is Dead & The Island (1990), My Children, My Africa (1991), Valley Song (1997), and The Road to Mecca (2000).

About the Cast

Daryl C. Brown (Willie) is thrilled to return to the stage after a hiatus in such an incredible show and work with such a warm and gifted creative team at Portland Stage. Favorite Stage Credits include: RENT (Benny), Six Degrees of Separation (Paul), Club 12 (Sebastian) Godspell (John), Wait Until Dark (Mark) and The Lion King (Mufasa u/s) TV Credits Include: Recurring roles The Young and The Restless (Edward James) and Days Of Our Lives (Orin Holt), Guest star and Co-star roles on Gossip Girl, The Agency, Cosby, and New York Undercover. Daryl has also lent his voice to many tv & radio commercials, video games, and animation projects. The New York Native would like to thank God for his continued mercy and his family for their uncompromising love. Searching for the next Beautiful Surprise.

Charlie Hudson III (Sam) is thrilled to work with The Portland Stage Company. Previous theatre roles include Chet, Fly, Crossroads Theater and The Vineyard Playhouse; George, A Raisin in the Sun; Richmond, Richard III; Topper, Undertaker's Man, A Christmas Carol; Sugar Boy, All the King's Men; Captain Carbon de Castel-Jaloux, Cyrano de Bergerac, Trinity Rep Company; Hades, Hillary, New Georges; Phrynichus, Old Comedy, Classic Stage Company; Ensemble Soldier, Mother Courage, Public Theater/NYSF; Fly, Sweet Bird of Youth, Williamstown Theatre Festival; Benvolio, Romeo and Juliet, Bread Loaf Acting Ensemble; Mark Antony, Julius Caesar; Booth, Topdog/Underdog, Brown/ Trinity Consortium. Charlie's film credits are The Rosa Parks Story (CBS) and Waterfront (CBS), and his voice is featured in the McGraw-Hill's PodClass GRE Vocabulary Study Guide. Mr. Hudson is the 2003 ACTF Irene Ryan Best Actor, Region IV. He is a 2004 graduate of Alabama State University and a 2007 MFA graduate of the Brown University/Trinity Repertory Consortium. Charlie would like to thank his loving family for their support.

Michael Littig (Hally) is honored to make his Portland Stage Company debut.  New York credits include Word to the Action (NYSF/Public Theater), Age of Innocence (Mint Theater Company), and Esther (New York City Opera).  Regionally, he has appeared in As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, Henry V, Comedy of Errors, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus (Utah Shakespearean Festival), Julius Caesar (Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey), The Chosen, The Glass Menagerie (The Hippodrome) and Crowbar (Hangar Theatre), among others. He is a proud cabinet member of the Rebel Theater Company under the direction of Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj.  Michael holds a BFA in Dramatic Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and is a Fulbright Scholar in Drama (Mongolia).

Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj (Director) is an Indo-Caribbean American Theatre Artist. He is the Artistic Director of Rebel Theater. Maharaj is the former Associate Artistic Director of Syracuse Stage and the Lark Play Development Center. Maharaj is the recipient of the NEA / TCG Development Program for Directors, TCG New Generations Grant, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Mellon and Cummings Foundations, Brooklyn Arts Council grant, Puffin Foundation, Time Warner Diverse Voices Fund, and the Van Lier Directing Fellowship. He is also the recipient of the Woodie King Jr. Award and four AUDELCO awards.

He was the Assistant to the Director on the Broadway revival A Raisin in the Sun.  Maharaj is a former director in training for the Emmy Award winning directing team at ABC's All My Children. He began studying design at Middlebury College and holds an MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

Stephen Swift (Sound Designer) is thrilled to be back at Portland Stage (previous designs include The Drawer Boy, Out of Sterno, Doubt, Indoor/Outdoor, and Augusta).  He currently lives in Boston and is the Sound Technician for the Brandeis Theater Company. Special thanks go out to Agent K.

Myles C. Hatch (Stage Manager) is currently enjoying his 10^th season stage-managing with Portland Stage. During the past eighteen years, Myles has worked in stage management with such diversified theatres as Maine State Music Theatre (ME), The Theater at Monmouth (ME), Arden Theatre Company (PA), Baltimore Shakespeare Festival (MD), Everyman Theatre (MD), Rep Stage (MD), Horse Cave Theatre (KY), New Stage Theatre (MS), Round House Theatre (MD), Source Theatre Company (D.C.), Washington Stage Guild (D.C.), Washington Jewish Theatre (D.C.), Asolo Theatre Company (FL), Westport Country Playhouse (CT), and the YALE Summer Cabaret (CT).
